Collectible items can be quirky and fun, rare and exotic, or just interesting. Oftentimes, collectors will shop the Internet looking for rare pieces to add to their collections. If you have a collection and you are looking to add to it, here are some tips to keep in mind when shopping online.
Read the description thoroughly
Don’t assume that if a collectible looks good it is in good condition. Read through the seller’s description carefully to learn as much as you can about the item. Be sure you ascertain whether the item has incurred any damage or unusual wear. Try to read between the lines and get a good sense of whether the item is in as good condition as you expect.
View the photos carefully
When selling items online, it is a good practice to include as many photos as possible, and from different angles. As a buyer, you should view the photos carefully and even enlarge them to see if you can spot any undisclosed imperfections. Most reliable sellers will take photos of any damage and disclose it, but some sellers may not. You can save yourself a lot of headaches if you inspect the photos before you commit to buying the item.
Negotiate the price
If you have the option to negotiate a price, do it. Most sellers are happy to haggle, and in some cases, they expect it. It’s not unreasonable to make an offer 5-10% below the asking price. You can try to negotiate a lower price, but don’t be surprised if you offer a very low price and your offer is declined. It doesn’t hurt to try though.
Ask questions
Don’t be afraid to ask the seller about the item in question if you are not sure. For example, if a collectible is supposed to play music, ask them if they’ve tested the item to be sure that it is in proper working order. A good seller will be happy to test the item or take more photos if necessary. Just be sure to ask if you are unsure.
